The Youth Action Council empowers high school students interested in marine science and ocean conservation to turn their interests into impactful, real-world experiences. Through hands-on workshops, collaborative projects, and mentorship from conservation experts, students transform their passion into meaningful actions that benefit both their communities and the natural world.

Participants gain valuable skills in leadership, public outreach, and environmental advocacy, enabling them to make a lasting positive impact and inspiring others to join in protecting our oceans and marine life

It’s more than just a workshop. Learn more about the Youth Action Council on the flip side!

As a part of the Youth Action Council students are encouraged to think of solutions to address each of the main threats to Southern resident killer whales and apply conservation measures in their local communities.

Students meet monthly with boots-on-the-ground scientists and real-world professionals who are working to better understand and protect the endangered population of killer whales.

Students are mentored through developing their own community engagement campaigns to raise awareness

Through the Youth Action Council, students are not only gaining hands-on experience in marine science and conservation but also helping to shape a future where Southern Resident killer whales can thrive. By connecting young leaders with scientists, fieldwork, and community outreach, this program builds both knowledge and passion that ripple outward—empowering students to become advocates while contributing to the long-term health of this endangered population of whales. The result is a lasting impact: inspired youth taking meaningful action today to safeguard the wellbeing of Southern Resident killer whales and the ecosystems they depend on.

Meet a Dolphin Doctor

Students talk with veterinarians, animal trainers and marine mammal scientists from the NMMF and Navy’s Marine Mammal Program. They learn about their career paths, their job duties, and have the opportunity to ask questions.

Be the Scientist

No matter the age, students will always have hands-on experiences, from mock animal rescues and exams to fish dissections and water sampling. Activities are designed based on students’ interests and age level.
