Erin Brodie, BS, RVT, is the Senior Veterinary Technician and Laboratory Specialist at the National Marine Mammal Foundation. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology with an emphasis in Marine Science, along with minors in Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics, from the University of Arizona. Erin went on to work for The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, CA, where she served for 13 years as Rescue and Response Coordinator. In this role, she worked with over 10,000 sick and injured cetaceans, pinnipeds, sea turtles, and sea otters. Her work also included extensive fieldwork and marine mammal health assessments throughout the Channel Islands and coastal California.
She later earned her Associate of Science in Veterinary Technology from Foothill College and spent several years working in small animal, shelter, and marine mammal medicine before joining the National Marine Mammal Foundation’s Animal Health and Welfare team in 2012. Erin helped establish and setup our facility caring for the Navy’s marine mammals in the Pacific Northwest, serving as the first veterinary technician at that operation. In 2016, she joined the U.S. Navy’s Marine Mammal team in San Diego, where she specializes in clinical pathology and anesthesia. In addition to advancing marine mammal medicine through her work with the team, Erin is passionate about fieldwork and conservation medicine. Spending a season in Antarctica working with Weddell seal pups remains one of the greatest highlights of her career.
Outside of work, Erin loves to travel, create new dishes in the kitchen, and set off on outdoor adventures with her husband in their sprinter van.
