The Coll Perske Memorial Fund for Marine Mammals warmly invites you to join us at the 5th Annual “PUCKS FOR PINNIPEDS” fundraiser on Friday, March 22, 2024. Demonstrating a commitment to the conservation of California sea lions and marine life, this event provides a unique opportunity to unite for an unforgettable evening of hockey, camaraderie, and a collective mission to create a positive impact on the lives of these remarkable creatures.
About the CGP Fund
The Coll Perske Memorial Fund for Marine Mammals stands as a tribute to the memory of Coll Gordon Perske, our friend and colleague who was dedicated to caring for California sea lions in both their natural habitat and human care. At the heart of this fund is a mission to improve the lives of marine mammals, with a primary focus on California sea lions, through scientific research, education, and the promotion of ocean stewardship.
After the loss of Coll Perske in 2014, the NMMF joined forces with Coll’s family and friends to establish this meaningful fund in his honor. The fund’s guiding principles are deeply rooted in Coll’s passion for marine mammals, and it aims to create and support various projects aligned with its mission.
Special Projects and Initiatives
The Coll Perske Memorial Fund for Marine Mammals operates under the leadership of the CGP Memorial Fund Committee, comprised of family members, friends, and colleagues. Chaired by Jennifer Dunham, the committee is dedicated to honoring Coll’s legacy and passion for marine mammals.
Significant projects initiated by the fund include the Perske Pinniped Health Project. This research endeavor focuses on advancing the health and welfare of all pinnipeds, with a particular emphasis on the California sea lion. The project aims to develop innovative medical and husbandry techniques that directly benefit the care, rescue, and rehabilitation of seals and sea lions and apply our veterinary expertise to medical response and conservation research initiatives.
In collaboration with the NMMF, the CGP Fund also supports the SCUBA Certification Grant. Honoring Coll’s legacy as an avid volunteer and skilled scuba diver, the grant provides students interested in marine sciences with Open Water Diver Certification, gear rental, and mentorship from the NMMF community engagement team. This initiative aims to break socio-economic barriers, offering high school students from underrepresented communities in San Diego County a unique opportunity to explore marine biology. Congratulations to 2023 recipients, Mary and Josue from the PREUSS school, both aspiring first-generation university attendees with a strong interest in marine conservation.
