Conservation of the Southern Resident Killer Whales is An Evolving Effort

A Calf is Born

On an expedition into the Salish Sea, scientists surveying the health of the endangered Southern Resident killer whales (SRKW) sighted something truly incredible: a baby orca. The healthy calf, discovered in June 2026 and named L130, is the latest addition to the endangered SRKW population, whose numbers hover around 74-75 individuals strong.

Scientists and the public celebrated with both positivity and caution. L130’s discovery coincided with the disappearance of L129, another calf first spotted in February of this year. Threatened by a limited diet, vessel noise and traffic, and chemical pollutants, only half of all SRKW calves make it to adulthood.

Conservation Challenges

L130 will spend its first couple years relying on its mother’s milk for survival–just like humans, but with one small difference. In our world, people drink milk well beyond youth. The calcium in milk is recognized as one of the essential elements for human health, and to maintain a healthy concentration of calcium, we are encouraged to consume 1,000mg of calcium a day.

SRKWs and their related ecotypes–like the Northern Resident killer whales and Bigg’s killer whales–have their own set of essential elements, which they derive from their diet and environment. However, it is unknown what concentrations of these elements lead to healthy whales.

A study published July 2026 sought to fill that gap in nutritional knowledge by analyzing how the Southern Residents and related ecotypes accumulate both essential elements and contaminants. Among their discoveries was an alarming statistic: resident killer whales, notably Southern Residents, accumulate more pollutants in their bodies than their neighboring ecotypes.

That study relied on liver and kidney samples collected in necropsy reports for the Southern Resident Killer Whale Health Database–a collaboration of the SeaDoc Society, the National Marine Mammal Foundation (NMMF), and the Center for Whale Research, who now head the effort.

Tracking A Growing Population

Fueled by over a decade of detailed tracking on the Salish Sea, the database has revealed key insights into everything from the social behavior and personalities, to the diets of individual orcas. It was even on one of these expeditions that the calf L130 was first spotted!

In general, research for the SRKWs involves a wide slew of tools and techniques. Drones take images and breath samples from above, acoustic tags track and record the whales in the water, and highly trained dogs sniff out whales (more accurately, whale poop) from the boats.

New innovations to monitor whale health continue to be developed. In July 2026, MIT engineers published their invention in Science–a “puffin-like” drone inspired by bird locomotion and capable of navigating the seas and the sky. “Such robots could help researchers monitor fragile marine ecosystems, without chartering a research vessel or deploying underwater equipment,” writes reporter K.R. Callaway in the New York Times.

What’s Next?

In 2025, Washington state enacted legislation requiring boaters to stay at least 1000 yards from SRKWs. Canada followed suit in 2026. These policies, developed on data proving that vessel disturbance is a major threat to the whales, came at just the right time. Two weeks after Canada’s Interim Order became effective, Vancouver and nearby Seattle would welcome thousands as host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. As visitors poured in, awareness campaigns like Be Whale Wise used the spotlight to elevate the plight of the SRKWs to the world stage.

The world of the SRKWs is constantly changing, as new calves join the pods, scientists and engineers pioneer breakthroughs, and human culture collides with whale lifestyles.

More than just hoping for the improved population growth and health of the SRKWs, the NMMF takes an active role by establishing the SRKW health database and equipping the network of scientists and changemakers who will carry forth the momentum.

The NMMF trains marine scientists and veterinarians via professional internships; inspires elementary school students through innovative workshops like the annual Seal to SEAL Workshop; and empowers student leaders in programs like the Youth Action Council, a blueprint for what successful high school level conservationist programming looks like.

Female SRKWs can live to be at least 90 years old, while males can live up to 50. For L130, who is only a few months old, a creative and data-driven approach to conservation remains integral for long-term survival.
