Dr. Lorenzo Rojas-Bracho is a marine biologist with more than 25 years of experience leading marine mammal research and conservation efforts in Mexico. His work focuses on addressing urgent conservation challenges through applied science, policy, and international collaboration.
He has played a leading role in efforts to prevent the extinction of the vaquita (Phocoena sinus), co-leading population assessment surveys since 1999 with Dr. Barbara Taylor and supporting multidisciplinary recovery actions. As Chair of the International Committee for the Recovery of the Vaquita (CIRVA), he advised the Government of Mexico on strategies to reduce bycatch and support sustainable fisheries.
Dr. Rojas-Bracho has served in key international leadership roles, including as Chair of the Conservation Committee of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), and has contributed to multiple subcommittees of its Scientific Committee. He is an active member of several International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) initiatives, including the Cetacean Specialist Group, the Red List Authority, and other global efforts focused on marine mammal conservation.
His work bridges science and implementation, contributing to practical solutions that protect marine mammals while supporting the communities that depend on marine resources.
